Under the Covers: WEEKEND (dir. Andrew Haigh) 2011

“Is it really wrong that I find the whole orphan thing pretty sexy?”

i’m practically Charlie Parker, i’m so jazzed that Criterion is releasing Andrew Haigh’s beautiful romantic drama, Weekend, one of the most sensitive and quietly urgent films of recent years, and a brilliantly directed pas de deux that earns attention far beyond its main selling points (a pivotal film in helping to end the ghettoization of queer cinema). Criterion’s first-run edition is gorgeous, and another credit to their ongoing relationship with IFC.

The Criterion Collection will release WEEKEND on dvd & blu-ray on 8/21/2012.

Weekend [2011]

Glen: It’s… you, like, become this blank canvas and it gives you an opportunity to project onto that canvas who you want to be. That’s what’s interesting because everybody does that.

Russell: So do you think that I did it?

Glen: ‘Cause you did. Well, what happens is while you’re projecting who you want to be… this gap opens up between who you want to be and who you really are. And in that gap, it shows you what’s stopping you becoming who you want to be.

Russel: I want you to know that I’m not here to stop you from going.

Glen: Please be quiet, shut up!

Russel: No, no, no. I just wanna, I just wanna… I just want you to know…

Glen: … Oh, fuck. You’re a bastard for coming down here, fuck me.
